audio mediums are probably one of the most important things i’ve ever introduced into my life. to be fair, i didn’t really introduce it into my life, many people and influences like family and friends have naturally done so over time.
music has always been a big part of my life. i used to want to perform it, then i wanted to market it. but i’ve always wanted to listen to it. it’s been able to transport me to so many different worlds, the way books and films have but in a more accessible way.
i think the audio medium is overlooked in the perspective of a routine. i don’t think we consider its impact on how we plan our days or get things done for ourselves throughout the week.
when i have a positive relationship with the way i organize my music, i have a positive outlook in general. it means i have something to listen to when i go for a walk, workout or need to focus. knowing i have music prepared for these moments means i know i have something to look forward to in those moments.
music may not be your main audio medium, maybe it’s audiobooks or podcasts. the same thing goes. how can you set yourself up for success in a way that supports those moments?
consolidate
i started doing this thing recently that i call a “brain dump”. i go through all the music that i’ve compiled in playlists over the years and just add songs that i remember liking or am feeling in the moment. it usually ends up being a huge mess of a playlist with different genres, moments and feelings. this will help you find a starting point into the music you need to fuel you for the current season.
exploring new artists
i like to take the music added to those playlists and explore. finding new artists is sometimes one of my favourite activities. i love getting lost in a few hours of going down rabbit holes of artist profiles. i do this by going to an artist i really like then checking out their artist radio and skipping through songs here and there while adding them into the brain dump.
moments & feelings
i used my playlists to really feel and support different moments. while i go through my brain dump after adding a sufficient amount of songs i start going through them and filtering them out into new playlists that make me think of different moods. sometimes i build on previous playlists i’ve made in the past like home alone or mornins, creating new versions of these with updated music for the zone that i am in now.
sometimes i just make monthly playlists. a few of my friends got me on this one year when they would just create empty folders every month and add music that was really calling to them during that month.
playlist covers
i personally love the process of adding playlist covers to my mixes. it just makes it feel personal and nice, matching a visual vibe to an audio tone. i like to hop on pinterest and pull images here and there that i think would fit my playlists nicely.
the point of all this is to build a world for yourself where you can actually be the main character. romanticize mundane moments. i promise it’s worth it.
